Chris Thomas

Chris Thomas is Production Director at Space Studios. Chris' progress into the audio field has taken a colourful and meandering route. Having always had an interest in all things audio, when he asked his careers teacher about becoming a sound engineering, he was told to become a mechanical engineer and move onto sound from there... Chris did the obvious thing and became a mechanic. Then, equally obviously, he went to University to read Language and Communication.

During university years he played in several bands, and was jointly responsible for the creation of the Live Music Society. This brought about several medium sized gigs within the Union, as well as the yearly band showcase 'The Big Pie'.

After obtaining his first degree, then a Masters, he went into... yes, you guessed it, the field of Public Engagement. Along with his academic experience, this developed his deep understanding of public engagement, deliberation, facilitation, and discursive behaviour. Fortunately, his interest in audio meant he was able to get the crystal clear audio recordings of the meetings, seminars, consultations and focus groups he ran.

After all of that public deliberation and consultation, Chris set up Space Studios with Jessica Morgan in 2005.

In the studio, he focuses on sound design, and audio post-production, as well as music engineering and production. Chris puts his understanding of dialogue and spoken word down to all of the years transcribing audio recordings of institutional discourse and focus groups.

As a bass player, he is used to jokes about the people that hang around with musicians. Some would say he IS the joke person who hangs around with musicians. His favourite plug in on Pro Tools is the entire Waves Platinum series.
