tips for sounding good

Whether you’re speaking in public or singing in a band, Jessica Morgan offers 5 tips for sounding better.

1. Learn to love your voice. Record yourself and get used to the sound of it. It’s a shock when you first hear your voice back – and yes, you do sound like that! But you can use the experience to alter anything you don’t like – pitch, speed, diction, accent.

2. Breathe. When we’re nervous our breathing is more shallow. Breathe deeply, filling your lungs from the bottom upwards. Leave your shoulders where they are. Your voice will sound more relaxed and, if you’re singing, you’ll be able to sustain those long belting notes!

3. Project your voice by addressing a point far away – the back of the room/hall/stadium where you’re performing. You don’t need to shout, but imagine that a person at the back of this space needs to hear you.

4. ENUNCIATE clearly and talk more slowly than you think you need. Your audience needs time to digest what you’re saying.

5. If you’re nervous, act as if you’re not. Become a performer, use exaggerated gestures, pretend you’re Richard Burton or Judi Dench.

Jessica coaches clients at Space Studios when they come for a Space Experience or Party. She is particularly good with first-timers and nervous singers.
